Yr 5 Semester 2 activities:
A large focus in semester 2 is athletics. Not only do we prepare for all the events in the carnival, but athletics is a suitable context for students to learn goal setting skills by setting realistic targets for themselves. They use iPads to record and view their technique in order to make adjustments and improve. Cross Country races are ideal for teaching students to evaluate their fitness levels and to practise pacing themselves in long distance events.
In our striking and fielding unit students were given multiple opportunities to bat, bowl, throw and field in modified t-ball and cricket games. They had the option of changing rules to suit their abilities or to simply make the game more fun. iPads are used as a tool for conducting interviews and ‘voice-overs’ to give students a chance to demonstrate their understanding and voice their opinions about the activities they are engaging in.
Here is a sample of what our Yr 5 students enjoy in PE:
Our Yr 5 students have explored a variety of modes of exercise to discover for themselves which ones they enjoy. They are developing game sense in sports such as volleyball, basketball, leaguetag and football. There are opportunities for students to umpire their peers and modify rules to suit their abilities.
